Item 4 on the Agenda of the May 10th 2016 Recreation Committee is a feasibility report in regards to putting a renovated Pit Wheel on the Merrington Lane Roundabout. The cost, according to the attached report, is put somewhere between £100,000 and £150,000. Reading the report myself there appears to be many uncertainties, but once started who knows where it might end. I would like people’s opinion; please leave a comment below.

Cllr. Kevin Thompson

  1. I am all for our local heritage to be advertised and celebrated. However that is a lot of money that could be spent elsewhere. I’m sure there are more important issues and projects around the town that this money could be used for?
Another major factor for me would be that the Lane roundabout is now a little wildlife haven on the edge of town , after being planted with a variety of trees years ago it is now an established haven that needs leaving as it is .
The clearing alone of the trees from this site would be a very expensive project.

  2. I tend to agree with Neil, I love the idea of celebrating our heritage but that is an awful lot of money to spend on one project, especially in the current financial climate. Maybe one for the future?

  3. I love the idea of celebrating our heritage too, but not at the expense of constituents. The wheel could be obtained through grants, though one smaller perhaps. It also should be on the roundabout at the top of the high street for locals to enjoy, but just people using the bypass!

  4. Don t think in this economic climate money should be used . A nice idea however put services and jobs first for Spennymoor
